Digital Storage Converter

Convert digital storage quantities between bits and bytes, decimal KB/MB/GB/TB, and binary KiB/MiB/GiB/TiB.

1 Byte = 0.001 Kilobytes

What Is a Digital Storage Converter?

This data storage converter converts a quantity of digital information from one unit to another. It supports decimal bits and bytes (kb, MB, GB, TB) and IEC binary units (Kib, KiB, MiB, GiB, TiB). It does not measure internet speed or transfer time.

Bit vs Byte

A bit (b, lowercase) is the smallest unit of data: 0 or 1. A byte (B, uppercase) is 8 bits. File sizes are usually given in bytes. Network rates are often given in bits per second. Lowercase b and uppercase B are different units.

Decimal vs Binary Prefixes

Decimal (SI) prefixes use powers of 1,000. 1 KB = 1,000 B, 1 MB = 1,000,000 B, 1 GB = 1,000,000,000 B, and 1 TB = 1,000,000,000,000 B.

Binary (IEC) prefixes use powers of 1,024. 1 kibibyte (KiB) = 1,024 B, 1 mebibyte (MiB) = 1,048,576 B, 1 gibibyte (GiB) = 1,073,741,824 B, and 1 tebibyte (TiB) = 1,099,511,627,776 B. KiB is not “binary KB”; they are different units.

Disk Labels vs Operating Systems

Drive manufacturers commonly advertise capacity in decimal GB or TB. Many operating systems display binary-based sizes (GiB or TiB), sometimes still labeled “GB”. Neither figure is necessarily wrong; they use different unit systems. This converter keeps decimal and binary names separate.

Mbps vs MB/s

Mbps means megabits per second. MB/s means megabytes per second. Because 1 byte = 8 bits, 100 Mbps corresponds to about 12.5 MB/s before protocol and network overhead. This tool converts the underlying quantities (Mb, MB, and so on). It does not test your connection or calculate real-world throughput.

How to Use This Converter

  1. Enter a non-negative value — Changing the value does not update the displayed result yet.
  2. Select From — Choose the unit of the value you entered. The displayed result stays unchanged until you convert.
  3. Select To — Choose the unit you want to convert to. The displayed result still waits for Convert.
  4. Click Convert or press Enter — Calculate the result.
  5. Swap — Reverse the From and To units and convert using the current value.
  6. Copy Result — Copy the currently displayed conversion result.
  7. Reset — Restore the default 1 byte to kilobyte conversion.

Supported Storage Units

All factors below are the same values used by the converter. They are expressed in bytes.

Practical Uses

  • File sizes: Compare KB, MB, and MiB listings.
  • Drive capacity: Convert advertised decimal TB to binary TiB.
  • Memory: Convert KiB, MiB, and GiB used by operating systems.
  • Network quantities: Convert megabits and megabytes (not live speed tests).

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between a bit and a byte?

A bit (b) is a single 0 or 1. A byte (B) is 8 bits. Lowercase b and uppercase B are different.

How many bits are in a byte?

There are 8 bits in 1 byte.

Is 1 KB 1000 or 1024 bytes?

In this converter, 1 KB = 1,000 bytes (decimal). 1,024 bytes is 1 KiB (kibibyte), not 1 KB.

What is the difference between KB and KiB?

KB is the decimal kilobyte: 1 KB = 1,000 B. KiB is the kibibyte: 1 KiB = 1,024 B.

What is the difference between MB and MiB?

1 MB = 1,000,000 B. 1 MiB = 1,048,576 B. They are not the same unit.

Why does a drive advertised as GB/TB sometimes appear differently in an operating system?

Manufacturers usually use decimal GB/TB. Many operating systems report binary GiB/TiB, sometimes still labeled “GB”. Convert both ways here to compare the same quantity.

What is the difference between Mbps and MB/s?

Mbps is megabits per second. MB/s is megabytes per second. Ignoring overhead, 100 Mbps is about 12.5 MB/s because 1 byte = 8 bits.

Does this tool measure internet speed?

No. It converts data quantities such as Mb and MB. Mbps and MB/s are rates when used per second. This page does not test network performance.

Are decimal and binary storage units both supported?

Yes. Decimal bits and bytes (b, kb, Mb, Gb, Tb, B, KB, MB, GB, TB) and binary bits and bytes (Kib, Mib, Gib, Tib, KiB, MiB, GiB, TiB) are all included.
