A generator does not “invent a clever word.” It draws characters from a set you allow (letters, digits, symbols) using the browser’s random number source. The point is that a stranger should not be able to guess the string by trying pet names or “Password1”.

What “random” has to mean here

If the next character is predictable from the last one, attackers who know the method can skip most guesses. Browser tools should call crypto.getRandomValues (or equivalent), not Math.random(), when they build passwords. ToolsTask’s generators run in your tab: the string is built locally. The page may still use ordinary site analytics like the rest of the site; the password itself is not submitted as form data.

Length versus character set

Each extra character multiplies the search space. Mixing uppercase, lowercase, digits, and symbols also multiplies it — but a long phrase made of ordinary words can still be stronger than a short “complex” string if the short one is only eight glyphs. Prefer length you can store in a password manager over a short string you reuse because it is hard to type.

Look-alike characters (0/O, 1/l/I) are easy to misread when you copy by eye. Some generators omit them by default and offer a toggle to include them. That is a usability choice, not a proof of extra cryptographic strength.

Two different jobs on this site

  • The Password Generator builds one password, lets you pick character types, optionally include look-alikes, and shows a simple strength label.
  • The Random Password Generator builds a list (up to 20) with the same uppercase, lowercase, numbers, and symbols checkboxes, always omits look-alikes (no toggle), then copies the whole list. Use it when you are filling several accounts at once.

Habits that matter more than the widget

  • Do not reuse a generated password on a second site.
  • Store the result in a manager; do not email it to yourself in plain text.
  • Turn on the site’s extra sign-in factor when it exists. A strong password plus reuse across breaches is still a weak system.
  • If a site forbids symbols, generate from letters and digits only, then increase length.

Are web generators “safe”?

A page you loaded over HTTPS, that computes in the browser and does not post the password to a server, is a reasonable way to get a high-entropy string. You still need to trust the page you opened (bookmark it; check you are on toolstask.com). A generator cannot protect you if you paste the password into a fake login form afterward.

Passphrases

A passphrase is several unrelated words strung together. It can be easier to type than xK9!mQ while still being long. A generator that only emits random characters is still useful for sites that cap length or forbid spaces. Do not build a passphrase from a quote you have posted publicly.

If you generate a batch list, copy it to the manager immediately and clear the clipboard if you are on a shared machine. The batch tool does not remember the list after you leave the page unless you copy it.

Takeaway

Use a generator for uniqueness and length, a manager for memory, and extra sign-in factors for recovery after a leak. The widget is a character picker, not a complete security program.
